In their daily work, scientists use English for Medical Purposes (EMP) automatically in the apparent absence of written rules. Instead, EMP is composed of several linguistic features that are always under a continuous evolution according to the progress of Science. On these grounds, Rosita Maglie prepared the PART I of her work with the specific aim to analyse, describe and exemplify the main characteristics of such a specialized language. Moreover, the Part II of this book is a more practical section and the efforts of the author were aimed at the acquisition of the capability of communicating EMP from the student side. In conclusion, this book provides scientists, medical doctors, health professionals and students attending scientific–medical universities with new information concerning EMP, thus permitting them to increase the efficiency of their communication in the tasks prescribed by their study or work situation. So, a very broad readership can take advantage of the notions contained in this book! (Text arranged from the Preface).Rosita Maglie is a PhD Doctor in Translation Studies. Since 2000 she has been a part–time Lecturer in Medical English. Her main research interests are in Specialized Discourse and Corpus–based Translation Studies. She has published an article which provides a brief summary of ESP (English for Special/Specialized Purposes) Studies from a historical perspective. Her PhD dissertation together with her other articles focus on the use of domain-specific parallel and comparable corpora specially collected in order to reach a two–old aim: a) testing the assumption that words and even terms do not live in isolation but in strict semantic and functional relationship with other lexical items and b) identifying translation equivalences in English and Italian Medical Purposes. Her latest article analyses how medical language enters the realm of fiction by considering the case of Saturday by McEwan. Her new research area includes English for Fashion in non–English speaking societies, a subject on which she has been a part–time Lecturer since 2003 at the University of Bari.
