Giovanni Battista Fogazzi, M.D., nephrologist, has been working on urinary sediments for more than 25 years. On this subject he has published about forty papers in international journals, monographs, and chapters in international textbooks. Moreover, he has run many theoretical and practical courses, some of which online, and has been invited as a speaker to several international congresses. This is the third edition of "The Urinary Sediment - An Integrated View" a full colour reference atlas published to excellent reviews in 1994 and 1999. This edition appears ten years after the previous one, a fact which explains the many changes this book contains. Ali parts of the book have been expanded and updated. More than 60 new images have been added and more than 110 images of the previous edition have been replaced. Room has been given to particles which were not described previously such as macrophages, decoy cells, unusual crystals and crystals due to drugs. Another distinguishing feature of this edition is the presentation of originai and personal urinary sediment data on various renal diseases. Finally, a new chapter has been added on quality control programs, which are aimed at improving the overall quality of urinary sediment examination.
