Role of the neurotransmitters and neuromodulators involved in feeding behaviour control. Recently, many studies have considered the role of the various neurotransmitters and neuromodulators involved in feeding behaviour control. Signals of “hungriness” and “fullness” are induced and inhibited by a huge number of internal and external factors, peripheral and central, with direct and indirect effects, all subject to never-ending tightly interconnected modulations. As a consequence, to understand the complexity of the information network which affect the alimentary behavior it is required an in-depth but also comprehensive vision of the regulating mechanisms which are involved. The present work provides an overview of the present knowledge on these factors, including cytokines, which are responsible in altering food intake in different pathologies. The neurotransmitter and neuropeptide roles are treated in this context given that the great amount of data leads to the expectation of future developments of feeding behaviour regulating substances.
