Introduction To The Underwater Cultural Heritage In The Sea Of Livorno

This volume Introduction to the Underwater Cultural Heritage in the Sea of Livorno is one of the results of the Thesaurus Project; an initiative developed thanks to the support of the Regione Toscana (FAS 2007-2013). This book aims to provide the wider public with a general and non exhaustive introduction to the complex and problematic nature of the underwater archaeological deposits present in the waters of the province of Livorno. The Livorno coastline and its islands, from the largest (Elba) to the smallest (Gorgona, Capraia, Montecristo and Pianosa), retain traces of archaeological deposits of different typologies: confirmed shipwrecks, underwater archaeological sites not yet really understandable and reported sightings of underwater deposits that have yet to be confirmed. Over the years, the work carried out by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Toscana – and in particular by its Underwater Operating Unit – has allowed for the preservation and understanding of this patrimony. This publication aims to raise awareness of the importance and fragility of this cultural heritage amongst a wider public.
