During 1999. north-easiern lialy was affcctcd by an epidemie of low pathogenicily aviari influenza (I-PAI) caused by a virus of the H7N1 subtype. The epidemie involved 199 farms and caused considerale losscs to the pouhry industry (6). In the month of December 1999. ihe H7NI LPAI virus mutated lo a highly palhogenie avian influenza virus (HPAI), which spread rapidly. affecting 413 farms. and deiermined the direct or inditeci dealh of over thirleen million birds of different spccics (5, 7, 8,9).
A peculiar eharacleristic of the Italian I999-2(XK) epidemie is that it affected a great variety of avian spccies including intensively reared chickens. turkeys. ostriche*, guinea-fowl. Japancsc quails (Coturnix coturni* japtmiva). pheasanls, Pckin ducks and a number of backyard flocks.
