Globalization is affecting communities, companies and public entities. It is both considered an opportunity and a threat. This book aims at addressing the effects of globalization on multinational corporations and developing countries. Specifically it presents a literature review highlighting how the concepts of being global and of globalization do not represent from an academic point of view a new field of study. The authors take into consideration the definition and the history of Multinational Companies (MNC) analyzing how globalization impacts the developing countries with a specific consideration of the opening of financial markets to foreigners, the opening of domestic markets to foreign goods and a focus on domestic markets and international trade. After the theoretical part, the book takes into consideration the historical evolution of a multinational company: Walmart. Specifically the research question is about the presence of Walmart in Mexico: did it help or did it hurt the economic conditions? This book aims at contributing to the debate on globalization and on the role of MNC’s on economic development in developing countries knowing that there is no economic development without social development and these two agendas have to be addressed simultaneously.
