This book discusses the role and place of media and communication in European integration. It provides historical, sociological, cultural and political analyses of a range of aspects where media culture and communication have been important in the process of «making Europe», not only politically and institutionally, but also culturally. In particular, the book explores this process through two crucial dimensions: the process of mediating and representing, indeed constructing, Europe through media and culture and the process of making Europe’s media and culture through processes of institutionalisation, regulation and policy. These two aspects are rarely analysed as integral parts of a complex relation of Europe and its symbolic spaces in culture and media. The chapters in the book aim to shed light on the historical development of Europe and media policy, the challenges and characters of public sphere and European identity, the role of Europe’s cultural diplomacy outside Europe, the place and role of citizens in Europe and their media and the efforts to make connections and democracy.
